Feb 04, 2025
Do you know everything you need to know to be a successful franchisee? Perhaps when you invested in your franchise, you thought you would automatically acquire everything you needed to run a profitable business. But that is not the case. Franchisees must learn much about managing and owning a franchise to succeed.
In this blog post, I’ll highlight four key things franchisees should know but might not. If you find yourself in this situation and are unaware of any of them, I encourage you to take action so that you can thrive in your franchise organization. The good news is that you are not alone! By the end of this reading, I’ll share how we can help you take the first step.
But first, subscribe to our YouTube channel and Podcast, and follow us on all social platforms!
1. How to master your financials (way beyond the basics)
Most franchisees know financial basics like budgeting or keeping the books balanced. But to truly be a successful franchisee, you must go beyond that. You must master your profit and loss statement (P&L).
Also known as the financial or income statement, the P&L impacts everything in your business, either positively or negatively, from your cash flow to your balance sheet. Understanding it and becoming an expert in this will give you a clear picture of your day-to-day operations and your business's financial health.
This skill will also allow you to make strategic, smart business decisions about what you and your franchise leaders need to do to hit your profit targets every day. This is why this is so crucial.
If you cannot understand every line item in your income statement or how to do the math behind it to move the numbers in your favor, you absolutely need to focus on acquiring this knowledge so that you can have a profitable and successful franchise business.
2. How to acquire leadership skills to inspire and drive results
Knowing your business, having enough capital, and understanding the income statement is not enough. To achieve more with your organization, you must inspire your people to not only follow the standards, policies, and procedures you ask of them but also to do great things and give you their discretionary effort. But they won’t do this unless they see you as an inspiring leader who genuinely cares about them.
Those organizations with amazing, inspiring, and motivating leaders have far a handful higher results than those where the leader is just a numbers counter.
That is why building and growing your leadership skills is a critical thing you need to know, but you may not know it.
You also need to create and communicate a clear charter (mission, vision, and values) to your people and, of course, lead by example because what matters most is not what you say but what you do every single day.
Your team is the greatest asset in your organization, and your leadership abilities to motivate them will impact the bottom line.
So, invest in your personal growth and your leaders' development, and you will see how your organization improves and reaches its full potential.
3. How to create systems and processes
The next thing that you need to know, and you may not know it, is that you have to create, develop, design, document, and train systems and processes around your business so you can delegate your operations successfully every single day.
Just as the franchisor provides systems and processes to duplicate their brand, you must do the same for your business management systems. Include everything your unit managers need to manage and supervise your organization effectively and achieve the desired results, along with the training to support their learning process.
Training your team on standard operating procedures will ensure consistency in your operations and allow them to do the job on their own and exactly as you want it done. However, they will only be able to execute their tasks with a high level of excellence if they know how to perform them and what’s expected of them.
You also require the tools to follow up and maintain quality control on the systems you want them to follow.
- Remember that delegation is not just a necessity; it is a cornerstone of scalability.
If you want to grow into a multi-unit enterprise, you must know how to delegate. And the first step is to create the systems and processes that will allow you this independence.
4. How to grow your organization
If you are a single-unit franchisee, you run your business every day, which means that you essentially have a job. If you want to have time and financial freedom and become a successful franchisee, you need to know how to grow into a multi-unit enterprise, multiply your profits, and maximize your organization's opportunities.
Expanding into a multi-franchise organization will also offer growth opportunities for your team members, inspiring them to pursue new career paths and elevate themselves professionally.
Opening more units also means that you are diversifying your risk. That way, if one of your stores is not doing well, you still have the other ones to rely on. This is why growing into a multi-organization will not only bring you more money but less risk in your investment.
- This cannot just be wishful thinking. The skill of scalability implies knowing where, when, and how to grow your business and understanding what it takes to open unit after unit.
You need to know how to select great locations, develop great leaders and teams to run those organizations, manage the people who will work at those units, and supervise those stores to ensure they produce the profitability you expect.
This is essential for becoming a successful franchisee. Unfortunately, it doesn't come naturally, which is why you may not realize that you need to proactively learn and develop these skills and knowledge to achieve your business dreams and financial goals successfully.
I hope this gives you an idea of what you need to know to be a successful franchisee. Remember: these are not just strategies; they are the foundation for turning your franchise into a thriving, scalable enterprise.
